Peru consolidates itself as the world’s third-largest exporter of ginger

In 2020, Peruvian ginger exports totaled 108.4 million dollars, i.e. 157.5% more than in the previous year, according to information shared by the Center for Research on Global Economy and Business of the Association of Exporters (Cien-Adex).

China was the world’s main ginger supplier with 52.9% of the total equivalent to 718.5 million dollars, i.e. 25.7% more than in the previous year.

It was followed by the Netherlands, with 11.4% of the total (155.6 million dollars), and Peru with 7.8% of the total (105.6 million dollars). Cien-Adex highlighted that Peru was the market that presented the greatest dynamism, as it grew by 159.8% in value and by 117.7% in volume over the previous year.

Peru mainly exports fresh ginger (91.9% share), followed by dehydrated ginger (3.8%), juice (3.6%), and powdered ginger (0.7%). It also exports ginger purée, candied ginger, and ginger infusions, which jointly accounted for 0.03% of ginger exports.

Peruvian organic ginger exports increase and this trend is expected to continue due to the growing consumption in North America and Europe. In 2020, organic ginger exports grew by 206.4% in value while conventional ginger exports increased by 102.5%.

Exports January-November 2021
Between January and November 2021, Peruvian ginger (kion) exports totaled nearly 81.2 million dollars, i.e. 13.4% less than in the same period in 2020, Cien-Adex said.

The ginger produced in Peru reached 42 nations. The United States was the main destination with 39.1 million dollars, i.e. 4% more than in the previous year, and accounting for 48% of Peruvian exports.

It was followed by the Netherlands with 20.5 million dollars (-41%) and Canada with 3.8 million dollars (-6%). The remaining top 15 destinations for Peruvian ginger were Spain, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Italy, South Korea, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, and Brazil.
